Here’s what I think about Seven Potions after trying out their grooming products!
In the world of men’s grooming, there are plenty of brands to choose from. While that can make shopping a little overwhelming, it also means that you can discover new and promising brands.
In this case, that new (to me) and promising brand is Seven Potions. This UK-based company was founded in 2015 with the goal of creating premium, sustainable grooming products.
For this hands-on review, I tested five of their products over the span of a few weeks to see how they gelled with my daily grooming routine. Read on for my unbiased thoughts on each product and my recommendations.
Seven Potions: The Brand
Thanks to its classic-style branding, Seven Potions looks and feels like a grooming brand that’s been around forever, but this company is far from old-fashioned.
Seven Potions really shines when it comes to sustainability. Although more and more grooming brands are embracing sustainable practices, few are built around an ethos of sustainability, and this is where Seven Potions is different.
For one, Seven Potions prioritizes natural, cruelty-free, and vegan-friendly ingredients that are responsibly sourced. In addition, the company uses only recyclable containers and packaging. Instead of plastic, Seven Potions uses a biopolymer made from renewable sugarcane.
All of this means that each Seven Potions product is formulated to be clean yet effective. But do those formulas actually work? Let’s take a look at some of their products to see whether Seven Potions can measure up.
Anti Ageing Moisturiser Review
I’ve struggled to find good moisturizers. They either don’t work for me or leave my skin feeling greasier than I’d like.
Enter Seven Potions’s Anti Ageing Moisturiser. This is billed as a lightweight moisturizer, and it absolutely earns that title. Unlike other moisturizers, it goes on more like a cream and less like a lotion.
It’s also incredibly gentle and can be applied as thin as you like. This makes it ideal for applying to the under-eye area and other sensitive spots.
Despite how lightweight it is, the Anti Ageing Moisturiser does a great job of hydrating. Since I started using it regularly, my skin has gotten noticeably softer, and I’ve also seen a reduction in flaking and dry skin.
You can rest at ease knowing that there are natural ingredients, like cocoa seed butter and cucumber fruit extract, at work. You can really tell that this formula is squeaky clean, and that’s especially good news for guys with sensitive skin.
With all of that said, if you are looking for a heavier-duty moisturizer, then this probably won’t cut it for you. If you need something more intense, check out our top picks for moisturizers.
Also, while Seven Potions states that it’s fragrance-free, this moisturizer does have a slight, inoffensive scent that’s reminiscent of an extremely light sunscreen. It shouldn’t affect sensitive skin, however.
My only complaint is that the ingredients aren’t listed on the package or the site, and it’d be nice to know exactly what’s going into this. Otherwise, this moisturizer knocks it out of the park.
Hair Styling Paste Review
While finding a moisturizer can be difficult, it’s even trickier to find good styling products for my flat, thin hair, so I had tempered expectations for the Seven Potions Hair Styling Paste.
I even had my doubts after cracking open the container. The paste is a light, fluffy product that feels like whipped cream, and I was worried that it wouldn’t provide enough hold or texture.
To my surprise, this paste behaves much differently than I thought it would.
On the hands, it feels like a cream, but once it’s worked into the hair, it behaves more like a light clay, adding a lot of matte texture (and even a bit of volume). As a plus, it has a pleasant almond scent that’s sweet but not overwhelming.
Because it creates so much texture, the Hair Styling Paste is ideal for more casual hairstyles.
I sport a loose side part, and this paste is great for that kind of style. I can’t say how well it’d perform with thicker hair, though.
Salt Texturizing Hair Styling Spray
This Texturizing Spray is Seven Potions’ take on the classic sea salt spray. It’s designed to provide a subtle grit to the hair that adds volume and matte texture.
First of all, I was impressed right out of the gate by the size of the bottle—for $19, you get a whopping 200ml. The bottle also features a convenient locking mechanism, which is surprisingly uncommon on sea salt spray bottles.
The spray itself does everything as advertised. It delivers a nice matte finish as well as a bit of volume and lift. It feels a lot more natural than some other sea salt sprays I’ve tried that felt more like hairspray.
It’s not as gritty as some other sprays, but it’s still pretty strong. I only need a few short spritzes to get my hair where I want it. That said, if you do want a gritty texture, this may not be the spray for you.
I prefer to use this as a pre-styler to create a textured base, though you can use it as a post-styler for a more classic windswept look.
Vegan Sisal Beard Brush
Seven Potions was recently featured as the top pick on our list of best beard brushes for its boar brush.
As a vegan, I was delighted to see that the brand also offers this animal-free option with bristles made from the sisal plant, a type of agave native to Mexico and Central America.
This is a military-style beard brush designed to fit in the palm. The base is made of pear wood, and it’s easy to grip even if your fingers are slick with beard oil.
I prefer handled brushes for the control they provide, but as military-style brushes go, this one ticks all the boxes.
The sisal bristles have a nice balance of softness and firmness. They’re not rough on the skin, but they’re stiff enough to effectively untangle coarse beard hair.
My only nitpick is that it could be a tad bigger. Granted, I have fairly large hands, but the brush is just a bit smaller than I’d like it to be. I usually end up holding it with my fingertips for extra control.
Beard Balm
Finally, let’s look at the Beard Balm. This natural balm was created to be a do-it-all beard product and provide everything from hydration to styling.
This was the only Seven Potions product I tried that didn’t do anything for me. The balm has a Vaseline-like consistency that doesn’t go on as smoothly as other balms, and it’s a bit difficult to effectively work it into the beard.
It is effective at hydrating and softening, but I couldn’t really use it for styling. That may be due to beard type — I have quite coarse and curly beard hair — but whatever the reason, I couldn’t quite gel with this balm.
I also don’t love the citrus tonic scent. It’s quite medicinal, which didn’t mesh well with the scents of my other beard products.
Seven Potions: The Verdict
All in all, I was impressed by almost everything. If you’re after natural and effective grooming products, then I think Seven Potions should be on your radar.
Aside from the Beard Balm, everything performed well and delivered what it promised. I’m particularly impressed that these products worked well with my difficult hair types.
I also have a lot of respect for Seven Potions for taking such a proactive approach to using clean ingredients and sustainable processes. That’s a big win in my book, especially because the products perform so well.
I can confidently recommend Seven Potions if you’re interested in clean grooming products that actually work (and outperform much of the competition).
